Canadians welcome 2017 in a snowstorm

Fireworks on Parliament Hill in Ottawa

Despite heavy security and a blizzard, thousands of people flocked to Parliament Hill in Ottawa last night to ring in the new year and celebrate the countdown to Canada's 150th birthday on July 1.

Crowds watched the centennial flame being re-lit and danced and sang to a variety of Canadian music performers including, Radio Radio, Brett Kissel and Carly Rae Jepsen.

"The year 2017 will be an exceptional one, filled with activities and events that empower our youth; celebrate our diversity and promote inclusion; establish a spirit of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples; and encourage us to discover Canada’s natural beauty and strengthen our environmental consciousness," said Heritage Minister Melanie Joly, in a press release.

As part of the Canada 150 celebrations, Heritage Canada is sending a symbolic red leather couch across the country and inviting Canadians to share their stories about what the country means to them.
In addition, Parks Canada is giving away free passes (good for all of 2017), which enables Canadians to visit national parks, historic sites or marine conservation areas.
